Your colonoscopy, age by age

Without symptoms, your age and family history decide.

  1. Under 40

    Only with a reason

Symptoms like bleeding or anemia, or a first-degree relative with early colon cancer.

  2. Age 40

If cancer runs in your family

If a parent, sibling or child had colon cancer or advanced polyps, start here, or 10 years before the age they were diagnosed.

  3. Age 45

    Your first colonoscopy

Recommended for everyone, even if you feel great. It's the one that saves the most lives.

  4. Every 10 yrs

    If it was normal

A colonoscopy with no findings covers you for a decade.

  5. With polyps

    Follow-up made for you

The doctor tells you when to repeat it, based on how many polyps there were and what type.

  6. After 75

    Case by case

Decided with your doctor, based on your health and previous exams.

Signs you shouldn't ignore

With any of these, don't wait until 45.

🩸

Bleeding

Bright red blood or dark stools, even a little or «it stopped».

🔄

Alternating diarrhea and constipation

Days of diarrhea and days of constipation for more than 3–4 weeks, or narrower stools than usual.

🪫

Fatigue or anemia

Weakness or anemia with no clear cause.

⚖️

Weight loss

Losing weight without dieting or exercise.

🌀

Pain that won't go

Recurring cramps or abdominal pain.

🚽

Never feeling done

Feeling you need to go even right after you went.

What people ask most

Does a colonoscopy hurt?

No. It's done under sedation: you fall asleep, the exam takes 30 to 45 minutes and you wake up remembering nothing. You may feel some gas for a while afterwards.

I feel fine. Do I really need one?

Yes, if you're 45 or older. Colon cancer rarely causes symptoms early on; a colonoscopy finds polyps before they become a problem and removes them during the same exam.

What's the hardest part?

The prep the day before: a liquid diet and the medication that cleans out the colon. Our package already includes the medication, with written instructions.

Do I need someone with me?

Yes. After sedation you can't drive that day, so come with someone who can take you home.

How much does it cost?

$8,000 MXN (≈ $430 USD) all-inclusive, with the prep medication and a report explained by the doctor.

How often should I repeat it?

If it's normal, in 10 years. If polyps were found, the doctor tells you when, based on the findings.
